Milnathort in Bloom was founded in 2000 in an effort to improve the visual appearance of our village and to raise the community spirit of the village. Our committee has representatives from the Community Council, the Parish church and local youth groups. Our local Perth & Kinross councillor is also a member.
We started off with hanging about 24 baskets in the village and planting up 2 flower beds and they were watered by hand, now we have 15 tubs, 50 baskets, 1 farm cart, 4 flower beds and an ornamental planter and we are now watering the plants with a converted golf cart. We have more than doubled our list of watering volunteers.
80% of our plants are grown from seeds and plugs. These are brought on by volunteer members. These are used in the beds etc mentioned above. The group is keen to ensure they are leading by example and ensure that they recycle the compost and use it in the flower beds. All the old plants are composted at the end of the season and a village clean up is carried out as and when required. Last year we transformed a litter strewn untidy area into a rose bed. This has greatly improved this part of the village.
Milnathort in Bloom commissioned an ornamental hanging basket stand which stands outside the Town Hall. We have created flower beds at the southern entrance to Milnathort and are currently working on a village gateway design for the western approach. Refurbishment work has also been carried out on the old school bell. It was taken down shot blasted, painted and re-hung.
We are very fortunate that we are supported by most of the businesses in the village as well as many individual contributions. To date we have always had sufficient funds to more than cover our programmes.
Milnathort enter annually the Take a Pride in Perthshire and Kinross-shire Best Kept Village competitions and have had success in both.
