Scotlandwell in Bloom PDF Print E-mail

Scotlandwell in Bloom was originally formed in 1990 to enable Scotlandwell to participate in the local Kinross-shire Civic Trust competition, which we have been successful in winning in 1997, 2004 and 2005.  The village has been involved in Take a Pride in Perthshire for many years with significant success, although first place in the Best Kept Wee Village Category eluded us until 2005.

The group aims to achieve continuous sustainable environmental improvement of our village for locals and visitors alike.  Standards within the village have risen dramatically over the years.  Scotlandwell in Bloom has also undertaken activities outwith the immediate village envelope, including developing flower beds adjacent to Portmoak Parish Church and maintaining the nursery and alpine sinks at Portmoak Primary School.

The commitment and enthusiasm from the committee, residents and local businesses has evolved to new heights with the overall aim of sustaining and improving standards.  This was clearly demonstrated at the recent official opening of the Well garden, which marked the completion of Phase 1 of the Well Enhancement Project.

The improved standards are maintained via an annual planned programme of activities, the winter months saw the various tubs and in bloom areas coloured with winter flowering pansies and primulas, followed by a colourful mass of Spring flowering bulds.

Through working closely with other local groups, including the Gala Committee, Community Woodland Group  and Portmoak Festival we have aimed to maximise the benefit to the Community of our in Bloom activities.

The walled garden adjacent to the Well and Wash house changed ownership in late 2004, the new owners offered Scotlandwell in Bloom the opportunity to get involved in improving the area.  Volunteers came along to help prepare the area for planting and given this was a significant area it was decided that in addition to planting shrubs the ground should be covered by weed suppressing fabrics and decorative bark, both donated by local residents.

The Next Step for 2005/06

In September 2005, a submission was made to Take a Pride in Perthshire Association relating to the second phase of our Community Led Environmental Enhancement Project, namely the restoration of the Wash House.  The intention being to restore the fabric of the building in order it may function as a store for local groups e.g. Scotlandwell in Bloom, Portmoak Community Woodland.
